PREPARE YOURSELF , LEARN THE ROPES
DID YOU KNOW??
Once you are an "exhibitor" you are a "handler" too! Or at least the terminology to use is "handler". You will be the "handler" of your dog. But there are also Handlers (with a capital H ) and these are the folks who often make their living hiring out their services to proud owners of many show dogs, who will meet the Handler at ringside or send the dog with the Handler, and they will show the dog. If you want to avoid the expense of hiring a Handler, this book is for you. And even if you DO decide to hire a Handler, The training that you do with your dog will be of great benefit in the long run. As a good Handler will tell you, a well trained dog that already “knows the ropes” is much easier to “finish” than an unruly or frightened dog that has never had any Show training. Your dog needs to learn how to "gait" and how to "stack". He also needs to learn to be touched and examined by a judge without flinching, growling, or backing away.
WATCH OUT! DOG SHOWING IS ADDICTIVE!
The AMERICAN KENNEL CLUB conformation show is not just a "beauty pageant" for dogs. The original purpose of the conformation dog show was (and still SHOULD BE) the venue to select the best breeding stock for the perpetuation of the breeds of dogs which are registered as A.K.C. dogs.

There are hundreds of dog shows in the United States held every year. Actually there are only about 15 days out of the year in which there will NOT be a dog show, somewhere in the United States. Dog showing is a popular sport, and can become addictive! It is a great family activity and when one considers that dogs and all things dog-related are a multi-million dollar industry it is not surprising to find that dog shows are well atended public events!
