Puppy Training Tips
This section if important to read even if you are not training a Show dog! So listen up...this stuff will help you to have a well trained dog both at home and away from home, in all respects.

First: about nipping and chewing:
The new puppy that nips and bites at pant legs and fingers and pulls off the baby's diapers may be cute, but those teeth can HURT. This behavior can be stopped. From long experience of raising up puppies, I have found that a very quick "pinch" on the back of the nect at the EXACT time that those tiny needle sharp teeth are piercing your pants leg is often all that is needed. This pinch should not be a "shake," nor a "lift up", it should be a "pinch" and should be quick and sharp enough to elicit a yelp from the puppy. This is VERY effective and works pretty fast, I suppose because it very much resembles exactly what mamma dog does when she wants to warn the puppy that she has had enough. The other thing to do, (and this is part of the pinch and follows immediately after....offer the back of the hand or the palm of the hand to the puppy to LICK, (not nip) and as soon as the puppy nuzzles your hand, tell him in a soft and soothing tone of voice, "good puppy, good dog". That is just one small step of course but the results are BIG! And by the way, this whole process is the first step towards teaching your dog to “wait” and “watch” when you are baiting.
The "puppy" in the photo IS a puppy. Just six months old! Big dog puppies grow into BIG DOGS quickly! Train out the biting habit before he (or she) gets this big!

Having raised Newfy puppies for many years, believe you me, I have experienced the pain of those sharp little teeth. I have also experienced the loss of several remote controls! Chewing and biting is an issue with all puppies, and the more you know and learn, the better you will be able to control this!

Training little kids to work with puppies is part of the job if you have children in your household. LIttle children tend to carry around cookies with them and nothing is more difficult than to teach a puppy NOT to bite at children's hands when they are carrying cookies. so rules need to be made. Two of them are: (for your children) no walking around with cookies in your hands! In other words, sit down at thetable to eat!) And the other rule again is for the kids: If you do carry cookies around, don't hold them high up in the air, this only makes the puppy jump up to bite at their hands! You are the adult in the household, it is up to you to make the environment safe for the kids and also for the puppy. So this is something that you must pay attention to when you are trying to get a puppy to stop biting and nipping. The puppy can't be blamed for following his natural instincts.

As for eating and training against food aggressive problems, when you are bringing up the puppy, put your hands into his food bowl often while he is eating. Every so often, pick the bowl up and stir some extra food into it. If you handle his food while he is growing up and "bother" him while he is eating, he will be much less likely to nip at kids while he is eating.

One of the major things that you need to remember is that when you present the dog to the judge in the ring, he MUST examine the bite, or you must show the judge the dogs bite yourself. Therefore it behooves you to teach that puppy every aspect of having a human's hands, fingers and so on in his mouth. Practice this daily with your puppy until he gets very used to the idea that you are going to open his mouth, take food out of his mouth, and generally handle him about the mouth and teeth and gums.
