WHAT IS A RESPONSIBLE BREEDER??

The question of where to purchase your purebred puppy is vital for the future happiness of you and your dog.

FIRST RULE:

Buy from a RESPONSIBLE BREEDER.

And who and what, you may ask, is a "responsible breeder"

Here are just SOME of the requirements:
A responsible breeder raises the puppies in an environment with plenty of stimulation (especially in the form of human contact) as they grow and develop.

A responsible breeder does not have a LOT of breeds. (they may have a lot of the breed they are interested in, but they don't have a lot of different BREEDS)

A responsible breeder requires a contract that encourages a spay or neuter process or strict expectations concerning any future breedings.

A responsible breeder offers health guarantees for the puppy.

A responsible breeder has done health checks on the sire and dam of the puppies.

A responsible breeder offers legitimate AKC papers or UKC papers on the puppy.

You can see the dam of the puppies, in the whelping area or puppy area or household. (Sometimes the male lives elsewhere......responsible breeders research the pedigrees of planned breedings and may need to go elsewhere to find the perfect mate for the breeding)

A responsible breeder requires that should anything in the future occur where you can not keep the animal, it will be returned to the breeder absolutely and unconditionally regardless of age or health.

A responsible breeder belongs to a local kennel club or breed club or a national parent Breed club or works closely with grups within the community such as local humane shelters or that sort of thing.

A responsible breeder has a vested interest in the animals he/she is raising and participates with them in related activities such as conformation or obedience or working titles or occupations. ( a Cattle dog breeder may participate in herding trials......a pekingese breeder may participate in conformation showing)

A responsible breeder sells puppies privately and not through brokers or pet stores.

A responsible breeder will be available to you at any time of the day or night by phone to answer your questions

A responsible breeder belongs to the "rescue" group of their club and will help in some form or another to save the animals they have dedicated their lives to from inhumane treatment.

All of this is just the bare beginning of what makes a "responsible" breeder.
